A functional but uninspiring guest walkway leading to one of Zanzibar's most iconic over-water restaurants, transformed in five weeks into a sensory journey that immerses arriving guests in the island's coastal beauty.
Context
The Rock sits on a small reef offshore from Michamvi Pingwe. Guests cross a beach pathway before boarding the short transit to the restaurant - a pathway that, before our work, did not match the experience that waited at the end of it.
Challenge
A five-week window. No room for irrigated planting. A pathway that needed to feel like the start of the meal - comfortable, photographable, unmistakably Zanzibari, and resilient to coastal weather.
Design strategy
- Coral Rock Moon Gate. A striking entrance crafted from indigenous stone, fusing Zanzibar's heritage with a modern, sculptural threshold.
- Natural material palette. Weather-resistant timber, terrazzo, and thatch chosen for durability under salt and sun.
- Signature ocean-view swing. An instant attraction that gave guests a photo-worthy moment and amplified the property organically through social posts.
- Functional lounge spaces. Terrazzo benches and shaded seating that absorb pre-transit congestion at peak hours.
- Native plant borders. Drought-resistant species frame the pathway without requiring irrigation infrastructure.
“The Rock's pathway is no longer just a route - it's the first chapter of the dining experience, proving that thoughtful design can transform utility into wonder.”

Lessons from the land
In the first three months, the swing alone drove a measurable increase in organic guest posts. More importantly, the pathway began to feel like part of the meal - proof that a hospitality landscape can both celebrate local identity and earn its operational keep.
